What Is a Car Safety Test?
A car safety test (also known as a vehicle safety inspection) is required in Ontario when:
- Selling or buying a used vehicle

- Rebuilding or significantly modifying a vehicle
- Transferring ownership not within a family
This test confirms that your vehicle meets the minimum safety requirements set by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation. After passing, you’ll receive a Safety Standards Certificate, valid for 36 days from the date of issue.
